Awesome Act – The son of Awesome Again remained in quarantine Monday after arriving at Santa Anita on Sunday from Europe. He goes in Saturday’s $1 million Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf
Jeremy Noseda trains Awesome Act, who broke his maiden at Goodwood on Oct. 1, and then was ninth in the Dewhurst Stakes last out on Oct. 17 after missing the break.
Ryan Moore gets the mount for the first time on Saturday.
Becky's Kitten – “He worked just great,” said Blake Heap, assistant to trainer Wesley Ward, of the son of Kitten’s Joy, runner-up in the 2004 Breeders’ Cup Turf.
Becky’s Kitten drilled 5f on Sunday in 1:00 on the Santa Anita turf, jogged Monday and will gallop on Tuesday, Heap said.
Exercise rider Roberto Sistio was aboard for the workout. Julien Leparoux has the call for Saturday’s engagement.
Bridgetown – The Summer Stakes winner calmly took in the sights, standing in front of the grandstand, before galloping 1½ m at Santa Anita on Monday.
Trainer Ken McPeek reports the colt, along with his four other 2yo stablemates, has done well since arriving from Kentucky on Oct. 19. Bridgetown had his final work on Oct. 31, breezing 5f in 1:02 4/5.
Buzzword – The son of Pivotal, who became a stakes winner at Longchamp in September, remained in quarantine Monday after arriving with the Godolphin forces on Sunday.
Buzzword goes in the Juvenile Turf on Saturday.
The colt is trained by Saeed bin Suroor, who is due to arrive on Tuesday.
Dean's Kitten/Kera's Kitten -- Having both just raced within the last two weeks, Kenneth and Sarah Ramsey's hopefuls Kera's Kitten (first on the Preference List) and Dean's Kitten (third on the Preference List) will gallop up to their potential stakes engagement on Friday.
According to trainer Mike Maker, should both horses get in, Ramon Dominguez will pilot Dean's Kitten and Rajiv Maragh will climb aboard Kera's Kitten. Should the latter be the only, Dominguez would get the call.
The more seasoned of the two, Dean's Kitten has run six times, posting two wins, the most recent of which came in the Oct. 25 Vision Stakes over a soft Belmont turf. Kera's Kitten is undefeated from two starts, both on soft grass. He followed up a maiden win at Kentucky Downs with an impressive victory in the El Joven Stakes at Retama Park.
“We'd obviously like to start both of them, but if we have to choose, we want to run the one we feel gives us the best chance to win,” Maker said. “If we have to make a decision, Mr. Ramsey will talk it over. Dean's Kitten is more experienced, and he's run against better competition, but Kera's Kitten hasn't lost yet, and he has a lot of upside.”
Eskendereya – see Juvenile
Fist of Rage – Trainer Ken McPeek reports he did not send Fist of Rage to California. The colt was unlikely to make the field for either the Juvenile or Juvenile Turf because of his place on the preference list.
Gallant Gent – Trainer Craig Lewis still was weighing options for his 2yo gelding Gallant Gent, who is possible for either the main track Juvenile or the Juvenile Turf, both scheduled for Saturday. He also still is considering a jockey.
The conditioner was told of the withdrawal of Dave in Dixie from the Juvenile earlier in the morning, possibly freeing up red-hot rider Joel Rosario to handle his mount in that race.
“With due respect to all riders,” the trainer said, “that isn’t going to make any difference at all. It’s all about the horse and the race. Give me the best horse and the rider thing will take care of itself. Every time.”
Lewis noted that the Norfolk Stakes third-place finisher had jogged Monday morning and would gallop up to the race.
Interactif – Interactif, with stakes victories in the With Anticipation and Bourbon, will team up with Hall of Fame jockey Kent Desormeaux in the Juvenile Turf.
Interactif, a son of Broken Vow, is unbeaten in a pair of starts over turf.
“He’s been awesome on the grass,” trainer Todd Pletcher said. “We just hope to get lucky and have a good trip.”
Mint Chip – Trainer Rusty Arnold opted not to send Mint Chip to California because he was unlikely to make the field for either the Juvenile or Juvenile Turf because of his place on the preference list.
Oasis Dancer – fifth on preference list
Pounced – The John Gosden-trained son of Rahy arrived on a flight from Europe Sunday afternoon and is eligible to clear quarantine on Tuesday. He is expected to visit the track on Wednesday. Pounced finished second, 1½ lengths behind Siyouni, in the Prix Jean-Luc Lagardere at Longchamp on Oct. 4.
Raging Wit – The son of Distorted Humor, fourth on the list of runners not selected on the pre-entry list, raced on Sunday at Churchill Downs and finished last in the Iroquois to remove himself from consideration for the Juvenile Turf.
Trainer Bill Mott said he had no immediate plans for the lightly raced colt who made his first career start in mid-September.
Vale of York – see Juvenile
Viscount Nelson – The Giant’s Causeway colt arrived at Santa Anita at 7:15 Sunday evening with the Coolmore contingent of seven horses. He is eligible to clear the 42-hour quarantine Tuesday and is expected to visit the track for the first time on Wednesday morning. Trainer Aidan O’Brien was traveling from Ireland on Monday and is expected at Santa Anita on Tuesday.
Viscount Nelson won a listed stakes in August and finished second, beaten three-quarters of a length behind Poet’s Voice in the Champagne Stakes at Doncaster on Sept. 12.
Zip Quik – Trainer Patrick Biancone scheduled Juvenile Turf contender Zip Quick for a 5f breeze on Tuesday morning at Santa Anita.
“I’ll be on him in the morning,” said jockey Mike Smith, who will ride the 2yo son of City Zip for the first time in the Juvenile Turf and will also be aboard Biancone-trainee Pulsion in the Juvenile on Saturday.
